So to answer this simply, our strong health and safety culture has helped us provide the ideal foundations to meet the challenges of working in a world coping with COVID-19. See below 5 ways to make your workplace a COVID-safe environment whilst reducing the risk of transmission.
Although requirements will vary for different workplaces working in various industries, and the huge scope to consider, there are some essential principles that will apply across the board.
1.Risk assessment
This is crucial prior to any return to the workplace and will form the basis of development and implementation of the control measures required for your workplace. This is also a legal requirement under the Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1999, businesses must be able to demonstrate steps taken towards a safe workplace.
2.PPE
The use of the correct PPE for employees and customers is crucial, communicating the new rules and adaption to processes and procedures both internally and externally is crucial. Facemasks, social distancing screens, hand sanitisers, floor markings to keep a safe distance, rules for common areas and allowing only essential trips between buildings and sites.
3.Protective screens
We are using protective perspex screens (as seen on BBC News) on all desks in the office which act to reduce transmission and also ensures our employees feel safe coming into work. We got ours from Workshield. This measure was taken in addition to the standard PPE, offering better protection to both employees and our customers.
4.Plan for worst-case scenarios
Ensure there is a clear procedure in place for dealing with individuals who become symptomatic while at work in line with government advice i.e. sending them home for self-isolation, cleaning and disinfecting workplaces and surfaces that can become contaminated and encouraging individuals to get tested. Communicate and reinforce emergency arrangements using internal communications, signage around the office and communal areas.
5.Remain flexible
Provide flexibility during the transition of ‘business as usual’ if new processes and services were implemented due to COVID-19 such as online services, deliveries etc. Customers and clients may feel hesitant to visit premises in person, so offering flexibility in payment methods helps.
